Letaka Safaris - Northern Highlights - Maun to Kasane   9 nights - Full Board

On your arrival into Maun (or your accommodation if you have flown in earlier), you will be met by your safari guide and the rest of the participants for your 10 day safari through northern Botswana.

There will be a safari briefing before departing for the Moremi Game Reserve, a drive of around 3 hours or a charter flight (depending on departure - see pricing section).

Letaka Safaris is a family owned company run by brothers, Grant and Brent Reed. Letaka have a particular interest in birding and walking safaris, though this particular departure is designed to be a general game-viewing safari. Without a doubt, the fact that the owners are experienced guides themselves means a great deal, and their team of guides are of a high standard, and this combined with the personal service experienced will rival anything available in the ‘group’ market.

Their safaris operate with a minimum 4 and maximum 9 participants. Travel is by specially adapted Toyota Landcruisers, with bucket seats for extra comfort. Vehicles are open at the sides to allow for game-viewing, though have a frame and a canvas roof. Camps consists of accommodation tents (approximately 9 x 15 foot with ample standing room, camp beds and mattresses, gauze windows and bed side tables), a camp fire area and dining tent. To the rear of each tent there is a an open ensuite bathroom enclosure containing a short drop toilet (with a throne seat) and a ‘bucket’ shower - cold, warm or hot showers can be taken at any time.  Personal toiletries are not provided so please remember to take your own.  We would also recommend you take a head torch. To the front of each tent is a verandah with two comfy safari chairs and a washstand. The camps are set up in the exclusive HATAB camping sites, and all camp chores are undertaken by the friendly safari crew. Delicious meals are served either in the mess tent or under the stars. All guests need to do is pack their personal belongings each time the camp moves – otherwise there is nothing to worry about!

The itinerary combines the key big game regions (excluding private concessions) of northern Botswana with the option to extend to Victoria Falls at the end. We can also arrange for you to spend some time exploring the Okavango Delta before joining the safari. There are many alternatives we’ll be happy to discuss.

Basic Itinerary

Day 01: Camping in the Moremi Game Reserve with Letaka Safaris

After breakfast, you will be collected by your Letaka Safaris guide at your accommodation in Maun and depart for the Moremi Game Reserve. If you arrive by air you can be flown into camp. The afternoon is at leisure to enjoy an afternoon game-drive in this game rich area. Overnight in camp (full board).

The Moremi is one of the most beautiful game reserves in southern Africa - an area of mopane woodland interlaced with giant fig and knobthorn trees, open vleis and river courses. Animals commonly seen in the area include elephant, lion, leopard, lechwe, cheetah, wild dog, tsessebe, impala, reedbuck, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, genet, civet and serval, and many of the smaller mammal species. The birdlife of the region is equally spectacular.

Day 02 and Day 03: Camping in the Moremi Game Reserve with Letaka Safaris

Two full days at leisure to explore the Moremi. The main activity is game drives, and the region is superb for big game, especially the predators which include wild dog. Also included is a boat cruise on the permanent waterways of the delta. Nights will be spent around the camp fire, listening to the sounds of Africa and discussing the days event with your guide. Overnights in camp (full board).

The Okavango Delta (often incorrectly referred to as a ‘swamp’) is the largest inland delta in the world, covering an area of some 15,000 sq. kms. The delta is formed by the flood waters of the Okavango River which rises in the Angolan highlands over 1000 miles away. The river enters Botswana in the north-western corner of the country, continuing for some distance (through the section known as the ‘pan-handle’) before spreading out across the Kalahari sands to create the famous delta. A haven for birdlife, the ecosystem is also home of many species of wildlife, including sitatunga, the strange swamp-dwelling antelope with adapted ‘splayed hooves’ for easy movement on the reedbeds. Other animals include elephant, buffalo, lion, cheetah leopard, lechwe, giraffe, zebra, hyaena, wild dog and many species of antelope.

Days 04, 05 and 06: Camping in the Khwai River private concession with Letaka Safaris

After breakfast on Day 04, you will depart Moremi and take a leisurley drive through the Moremi Game Reserve north-east towards to Khwai Community Area. The Khwai River forms a boundary between the reserve and the community area. Three nights are spent in at an exclusive campsite in the community area, exploring the Khwai floodplains on game-drives both during the day and at night. Overnights in camp (full board).

Game concentrations are still very high, though the main focus in this area will be to explore on foot and at night, using a spotlight. You will also have the opportunity to do a mekoro trip. Because the area is private, it is not governed by the same rules that apply in the Moremi Game Reserve, and so walking safaris and night drives are permitted.

Days 07, 08 and 09: Camping in Savuti with Letaka Safaris

After breakfast on Day 07, you will depart and head north through the Chobe National Park to the famous Savuti Marsh. Three nights are spent in this wilderness, with time spent game-viewing from vehicles (there is an opportunity to see some ancient rock art as well). Game-viewing in this area is good, particularly for lion and elephant. The marsh is also prime cheetah country. Overnights in camp (full board).

Day 10: Safari ends on arrival into Kasane

On this final day, you will depart Savuti early and drive through the Chobe Forest Reserve to reach the Chobe River region of northern Chobe, near Kasane. Enjoy a picnic lunch before taking an early afternoon boat cruise on the river to end the safari.

The Chobe covers an area of 11,000 sq. kms and its habitats range from the floodplain and swamp of the river to sand ridges, dry lake beds, bush and mopane forest.  There is very little development within the park, except for the grave and sand roads.  The Chobe stretches westwards to the Mababwe Depression (a dead lake area including the Savuti Channel). The birdlife is prolific and kingfishers, bee-eaters, the majestic fish eagle, huge martial eagle, ducks, egrets, plovers, herons, cranes, storks, geese, woodpeckers, shrikes, thrushes, buntings, chats and owls are just a few of the many species found here. However, Chobe is famous for its large animal herds. Hippo laze all day in the water and big elephant and buffalo herds visit the river to drink.  Kudu are often seen and the area is also the home of the puku; 16 other antelope species are present in Chobe.  The Chobe bushbuck is a sub-species of bushbuck found only here.  Giraffe, lion, leopard, waterbuck, mongoose, tsessebe, roan and sable antelope, lechwe, impala, warthog, wild dog, hyaena, baboon and vervet monkeys are among the other animals to be seen.
